Dear Salida Union School District Parents and Guardians,
On behalf of the Salida Union School District and its Board of Trustees, I am writing to share an important decision regarding the future configuration of our schools. At the September 8, 2026, Board of Trustees meeting, the Board approved moving sixth-grade students from Salida Middle School to our elementary school campuses beginning with the 2027–2028 school year.
This decision follows thoughtful discussion, careful consideration of student needs, and a review of feedback from our families and staff. At the center of this decision is our commitment to providing the best possible educational experience for our students. Moving sixth grade to the elementary campuses will provide students with an additional year in a smaller, more familiar learning environment before transitioning to junior high. We believe this structure will provide greater opportunities for academic growth, strengthen instructional continuity, and support improved student achievement.
Equally important is the social and emotional well-being of our students. Sixth grade is an important transitional year, and allowing students to remain on an elementary campus for one additional year provides them with more time to develop academically, socially, and emotionally before entering a junior high environment.
Over the coming months, District and site administration will work collaboratively to prepare for the transition, including staffing, facilities, curriculum, transportation, student programs, and other operational needs. We are committed to keeping families informed throughout this process and providing opportunities to share information and address questions as we prepare for the 2027–2028 school year.
We appreciate the parents, guardians, staff members, and community members who provided input and participated in this important conversation. The Board of Trustees and District administration remain committed to making decisions that place the academic success, safety, and overall well-being of our students at the forefront.
